
Education to Enterprise Webcast
Science and Technology in the Next Generation
McLean, VA, September 22, 2008— The Center for Excellence in Education (CEE) and Booz Allen Hamilton will host a panel discussion, From Education to Enterprise: Science and Technology in the Next Generation. The discussion will take place on Friday, September 26, 2008, from 12:00 to 1:00 pm in Booz Allen’s Newman Auditorium at 8283 Greensboro Drive in McLean, VA, followed by a reception. Participants can also attend remotely via a live webcast.
The rapid pace of scientific and technologic advances has dramatically increased the importance of education as the engine of the modern, globally competitive enterprise. The distinguished members of this panel will discuss the vital issue of science and technology education, and answer questions as part of the moderated session.

“A nation’s economic development, national security, and quality of life are dependent on its educational pipeline of excellence in science, technology, engineering, and math,” said Joann DiGennaro, President, Center for Excellence in Education, and moderator of the panel discussion. “Will the US maintain its leadership in future generations? What will be the US science and technology competitive landscape in 2030 or 2050?”
During the September 26 event, renowned experts will provide a candid dialogue around these and other issues that will help develop a broader understanding of the US position in science and technology.
Dr. George Atkinson, former Science and Technology Adviser to Secretaries of State Colin Powell and Condoleezza Rice, is Director of the Institute on Science for Global Policy (ISGP), which he launched within the 10-campus University of California system in January. In this role, Dr. Atkinson seeks to guide the ISGP in the creation of a new type of forum in which governmental and societal decision-makers routinely obtain a global, objective, up-to-date understanding of the science and technology that can be reasonably anticipated to significantly impact the increasingly global societies of the 21st century.
Dr. Wanda M. Austin is President and Chief Executive Officer of The Aerospace Corporation, an independent, nonprofit organization dedicated to the objective application of science and technology toward the solution of critical issues affecting the nation's space program. Before she became CEO in January, Dr. Austin was senior vice president of the company's National Systems Group, which supports the national security space and intelligence community in the acquisition, launch, and orbital operation of advanced technology space systems and their ground data stations. She is internationally recognized for her work in satellite and payload system acquisition, systems engineering, and system simulation.
Dr. Doug Himberger, a Vice President at Booz Allen Hamilton, leads the firm’s efforts in information analysis supporting Homeland Security (HLS) and Homeland Defense (HLD); leads the firm’s Global Risks Initiative Task Force, as well as the Pandemic Task Force, supporting government and industry in preparedness, resiliency, and continuity of operations; and is one of the leaders of Booz Allen’s Security team. In addition, Dr. Himberger leads the firm’s efforts supporting FEMA, providing a broad spectrum of preparedness, planning, response, and recovery skill sets. His team uniquely responds to national and regional requirements in the areas of emergency management, crisis response, disaster operations, and disaster recovery.
Dr. John Mather, of NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center, is the Senior Project Scientist for the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST). He received the 2006 Nobel Prize in Physics, shared with George F. Smoot of the University of California, for collaborative work on understanding the Big Bang. Mather and Smoot analyzed data from NASA's Cosmic Background Explorer (COBE), which studied the pattern of radiation from the first few instants after the universe was formed.

The Center for Excellence in Education was founded in 1983 by the late Admiral H.G. Rickover and Joann DiGennaro, President of the Center. Alumni are also predominately recognized in the Siemens competition (awarded the first place prize in 2006), and as Rhodes, Marshall, and Fields Medalists. Over 80% receive graduate degrees, most in science and technology.
