CENTER FOR EXCELLENCE IN EDUCATION CELEBRATES 25TH ANNIVERSARY AS A LEADING EDUCATIONAL ADVOCATE
CEE’s Commitment to Better Education for Gifted Students and Higher Standards in U.S. Schools Goes Unrivaled for a Quarter Century
McLean, VA –September 01, 2009 – The Center for Excellence in Education (CEE) is celebrating its twenty-fifth year of dedication to encouraging excellence and leadership in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). For twenty-five years, CEE has championed U.S. innovation, competitiveness, and international collaboration among the world’s future leaders.
CEE has contributed to the scientific leadership of this country since its founding. In 1984, CEE inaugurated the Research Science Institute (RSI) which is offered in partnership with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). RSI is a six week summer enrichment program that emphasizes advanced theory and research in STEM and proudly boasts nearly 2,000 alumni.
RSI alumni have included 412 Intel Science Talent Search semifinalists, of whom 8 are first-place winners. At the 2009 Intel Science Talent Search, an RSI alumnus was awarded 1st place and received a $100,000 scholarship; 25% of the National Finalists and 40% of the top ten awardees were RSI alumni. Alumni are also predominately recognized in the Siemens competition (awarded the first place prize in 2007), and as Rhodes and Marshall Scholars, and Fields Medalists. Over 80% of alumni receive graduate degrees, most in science and technology.
In 2002, CEE inaugurated its sponsoring of the USA Biology Olympiad (USABO) to train future leaders in the biological sciences.
CEE proudly touts that each Team USA member has medaled in the International Biology Olympiad since the United States first began competing in 2003, garnering 20 gold, six silver and two bronze medals. In July of 2009, two U.S. team members scored first and second in the world in the theoretical portion of the examination.
As an extension to its successful USABO, CEE has continued to raise the bar of excellence in biology by providing the interactive online Teacher Resource Center (TRC) which is available to teachers, particularly targeted to rural and inner city schools. Detailed study guides, previous USABO exams and other useful science teaching materials are found in this resource.
“I am thrilled that CEE is celebrating its 25th birthday, and that our organization is renowned nationally and internationally as it represents a dedication to nurturing young scholars to careers of excellence and leadership in science and technology, said Joann DiGennaro, Center for Excellence in Education President. “I credit our success to all those who believe in the Center’s mission and join with us to provide unique educational programs for this nation’s most precocious high school and university scholars. The Center will continue to help to ensure this nation’s globally competitive position.”
