PRESTIGIOUS SENATOR JOSEPH LIEBERMAN AWARD AT CEE CONGRESSIONAL LUNCHEON

April 4, 2017 (McLean,VA) - The Center for Excellence in Education (CEE) today announced that Dr. Lauren Ancel Meyers has been named by the Board of Trustees and the Alumni of CEE’s STEM programs to receive CEE’s prestigious 2017 Prize for Outstanding Achievement in Science, Technology, and Business. The Award acknowledges break-through work achieved by an alumnus of the Center’s renowned Research Science Institute (RSI) and USA Biology Olympiad (USABO). The Award is presented every two years to honor Senator Joseph Lieberman, former Senator of Connecticut, and former Honorary Trustee at the Center.

“RSI1990 was incredibly formative!” said Dr. Meyers. “Mycryptography research project, public presentation, and, most of all, my brilliant RSI friends, inspired me to become a scientist, tackling real world challenges using advanced mathematics.”

A $10,000 research stipend and crystal statuette was presented to Dr. Meyers at the annual CEE Congressional Luncheon, sponsored by Google, on Tuesday, April 4, 2017, in Room SR-325 at the Russell Senate Office Building.

CEE’s Research Science Institute, offered in partnership with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), is a six week summer enrichment program emphasizing advanced theory and research in the sciences, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Dr. Meyers attended the Center’s 1990 Research Science Institute.

Dr. Meyers is a Professor of Integrative Biology at The University of Texas at Austin, and amember of the External Faculty and Scientific Advisory Board of the Santa FeInstitute. She was trained as a mathematical biologist at Harvard and Stanford Universities, and her research foci include network epidemiology, optimization of infectious disease surveillance and control, and translational tools for public health.

CEE’s President Joann DiGennaro stated,“Dr. Meyers is an exemplary model of students supported by the Center’s programs. The Center is honored that this outstanding scientist is the recipient of the Senator Joseph Lieberman Award.”
