Center for Excellence in Education (CEE) Alum Receives Seaborg Award at 2020 Regeneron Science Talent Search
McLean, VA (August 11, 2020) — The Center for Excellence in Education (CEE) is pleased to announce that Helena Jiang from Buchholz High School in Gainesville, FL, won the Seaborg Award in the nationwide Virtual Regeneron Science Talent Search (STS) competition. Ms. Jiang attended CEE’s Research Science Institute (RSI) in 2019 is also a 2020 U.S. Presidential Scholar.
Glenn T. Seaborg, a nuclear physicist, received a Nobel Award for Chemistry with Edwin McMillan in 1951. Seaborg was actively involved in the STS throughout his lifetime. The award honors the legacy of the Nobel Laureate and a past STS judge. Each year at STS, the finalists select the Glenn T. Seaborg Award winner, who goes on to represent them as class speaker at the STS Awards gala. Dr. Seaborg served as a CEE Trustee.
The STS fourth place winner was Rupert Li, from Jesuit High School in Portland, Oregon, who received a $100,000 award for his math theory project that resolved an abstract algebra question. His creative approach to a specific type of mathematical model defined on graphs suggests a new approach that other mathematicians studying similar problems may find useful. Mr. Li attended CEE’s Research Science Institute (RSI) in 2019 and gave one of the top five RSI oral presentations.
For the past 36 years, the Research Science Institute has provided students with the opportunity to conduct original, cutting-edge research in state-of-the-art university laboratories, hospitals and corporate research facilities in Boston and Cambridge, MA. RSI is cost-free for students to attend. The RSI is collaboratively sponsored with MIT.
The Regeneron Science Talent Search, a program of Society for Science & the Public since 1942, is the nation’s oldest and most prestigious science and math competition for high school seniors. Each year, around 2,000 student entrants submit original research in critically important scientific fields of study and are judged by leading experts in their fields. Unique among high school competitions in the U.S. and around the world, the Regeneron Science Talent Search focuses on identifying, inspiring and engaging the nation’s most promising young scientists who are creating the ideas that could solve society’s most urgent challenges.
