McLean, Va. (May 11, 2023) – The Center for Excellence in Education  (CEE) is pleased to announce that Emily E. Brodsky, PhD, Professor of Earth and Planetary Sciences, University of California, Santa Cruz, has been elected the National Academy of Sciences (NAS). Election to the Academy is considered one of the highest honors and recognizes individuals who have demonstrated distinguished and continuing achievements in original research.

“I am so proud of Emily. She personifies CEE’s role in nurturing excellence in STEM research,” said CEE’s President Joann P. DiGennaro.

Dr. Brodsky is a 1990 alum of CEE’s Research Science Institute (RSI), the most prestigious international summer research program in the world for high school students. At RSI, which is collaboratively sponsored with MIT, students conduct original, innovative research; the program emphasizes advanced theory and research in the sciences, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Approximately 100 of the world’s most accomplished high school students are selected annually to participate in RSI, which is cost-free to all competitively selected students. To date, nearly 3,000 high school students representing every U.S. state and 61 nations have experienced RSI. CEE alumni benefit from networking and enrichment activities throughout their collegiate and professional careers. With the National Academy of Engineering and the National Academy of Medicine, NAS provides science, engineering, and health policy advice to the federal government and other organizations. With Professor Brodsky’s election, the total number of active NAS members is 2,565. She joins two other RSI alums as a NAS member. Joel Moore, PhD (RSI ’90), Chern-Simons Professor of Physics at UC Berkeley and a Senior Faculty Scientist at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, was elected as a NAS member in 2022. CEE Trustee Feng Zhang, PhD (RSI ’99), Core Institute Member, Broad Institute of MIT & Harvard, was elected a NAS member in 2018.
