McLean, Va. (May 10, 2022) – The Center for Excellence in Education (CEE) announced the top high school students who will be competing in the 2022 USA Biolympiad (USABO) National Finals at Marymount University on its Arlington, Virginia main campus from May 28 to June 9, 2022.
“These students are some of the highest achieving biology students in the USA,” said Joann DiGennaro, President of CEE. “CEE’s USA Biolympiad program encourages excellence in biology education and challenges students and their teachers to reach the gold standard in biology.”
The finalists will compete for ten days of high-level biology instruction inclusive of laboratory training and conceptual understanding followed by two days of testing. Ultimately, four students will earn the honor to represent the U.S. as the USA Biolympiad Team at the 2022 International Biology Olympiad (IBO) in Yerevan, Armenia from July 10-18, 2022.
In February, 11,000 talented students from across the nation logged into the online USABO Open Exam. Open Exam scores were released in March, and 434 students qualified as semifinalists. The semifinal exam was held virtually on March 31.
“This is an incredible journey these students take, and it demonstrates the passion these students have for biological sciences,” said Kathy Frame, program manager of the USA Biolympiad. “For high school USABO Finalists to experience this level of excellence is really an exceptional opportunity.”

About the Center for Excellence in Education
The Center for Excellence in Education (CEE), a nonprofit 501(c)(3) charitable organization, was founded in 1983 by the late Admiral H.G. Rickover and Joann P. DiGennaro, President of the Center. The Center’s mission is to nurture high school and university scholars to careers of excellence and leadership in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), and to encourage collaboration between and among scientific and technological leaders in the global community. CEE sponsors the Research Science Institute (RSI), USA Biolympiad (USABO), Teacher Enrichment Program (TEP), and STEM Lyceums. CEE programs are provided cost-free to participating students and teachers. The Center works closely with educational institutions, private foundations, corporations, government agencies, and individuals. For more information, visit CEE’s website, www.cee.org.
About the USA Biolympiad
As the premiere biology education and testing program for high school students in the United States, the USA Biolympiad (USABO) enriches the life science education of nearly 11,000 talented students annually. USABO’s mission concentrates on stimulating young scholars’ intellectual curiosity and developing their critical thinking in laboratory skills and biological reasoning to propel them to careers of excellence and leadership in science and technology. Through school registration, teachers gain access to a wealth of online biology resources, including recommended readings, study guides, practice questions, guidelines, and checklists to help them prepare students for study and testing. USABO has earned the coveted #1 Team in the World in 2011 and 2013. Each of the four members of the USA Biolympiad Team has medaled at the IBO since first competing in 2003.
