McLean, Virginia –July 12, 2011 – The Center for Excellence in Education (CEE) announces the inauguration of the National Lab Skills Initiative (NLSI) Share-A-Thons. The professional development one-day sessions will be made possible by the Southwest Virginia Higher Education Center (SWVHEC) on Thursday, July 28th from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The Share-A-Thons will take place at the Southwest Virginia Higher Education Center in Abingdon, Virginia (just off I-81, Exit 14).

The NLSI Share-A-Thons will allow teachers to demonstrate laboratory activities and the Center will work with teachers to prepare their laboratory activities for publication. CEE will invite all attendees to submit their activities for publication on the National Science Foundation (NSF) funded Science Education Resource Center (SERC) at Carleton College.

“Through NLSI, CEE will make hands-on inquiry based laboratory activities available to all high school students throughout Southwest Virginia and the surrounding areas” said Charles Farmer, National Lab Skills Initiative Manager. “It has been proven that hands-on inquiry-based learning in science leads to success in all educational disciplines.”

The overall goal of the National Lab Skills Initiative is to provide low cost laboratory activities to rural and urban teachers. CEE wants these to be hands-on inquiry based activities for high school students. These activities will be cost-effective, replicable, scalable, and contain an assessment component and possible public/private partnerships.
