United States Wins 4 Gold Medals at the International Biology Olympiad

UNITED STATES WINS 4 GOLD MEDALS AT THE INTERNATIONAL BIOLOGY OLYMPIAD U.S.

Team Member Rebecca Shi Takes 1st Place at International Biology Competition

McLean, Va. - July 18, 2011 - The Center for Excellence in Education (CEE) announces today the four member Team USA was awarded 4 gold medals at the prestigious International Biology Olympiad held in Taiwan. Team USA was part of 229 students from 58 countries who participated in this year’s competition.

The U.S. gold medal winners at IBO 2011 are:

  • Rebecca Shi, West Windsor-Plainsboro High School South, West Windsor, NJ – 1st place
  • Charles Du, University of Chicago Laboratory Schools, Chicago, IL – 3rd place
  • Chelsea Voss, Cupertino High School, Cupertino, CA – 4th place
  • Shulin Ye, Texas Academy of Mathematics and Science, Denton, TX – 7th place

U.S. team members Rebecca Shi (NJ) and Charles Du (IL) scored first and third places, respectively, in the world.

The scholars were accompanied by Ms. Kathy Frame of the Center for Excellence in Education and Dr. Scott Mills of Purdue University, USA Biology Olympiad (USABO) Coaches. All were flown to Taiwan courtesy of Korean Air, the official airline of the USA Biology Olympiad.

Nearly 10,500 students participated in the 2011 USABO. Team USA was selected based on their outstanding achievements as the top four students of 20 at the National Finals, held at Purdue University in June.

“The Center is incredibly proud of the success of Team USA 2011 members and their ability to honor the United States with their outstanding academic performance in the global competition,” said Joann DiGennaro, President of the Center for Excellence in Education. “This is a remarkable achievement for Rebecca, Charles, Chelsea and Shulin to be named as the top biology achievers in the U.S. and in the world.”

CEE is proud to declare that every U.S. team member has medaled in the international competition since 2003, bringing home twenty three gold, seven silver and two bronze medals.

The Center for Excellence in Education, a McLean, VA based nonprofit organization, jointly sponsors the USA Biology Olympiad with Purdue University.
